Today I finished a really fun commissioned painting for a friend. It was designed as a companion piece for a painting from earlier this year. Together they show winter and spring sunrises, inspired by views from my porch windows facing the same direction. The variations in color and light, just a few months separated from each other, always amaze me. Swipe ➡️ to see them side by side, and for some process photos of the newest painting. I’m excited to have my mixed media painting, “When the Trees Begin to Sing,” included in the Hot Night in the City Gallery Exhibition at @worcestercenterforcrafts this summer. Many thanks to juror Brad Chapman Bleau (@bradtheartist), artist and professor of visual arts at Worcester State University, for this opportunity! “A Doorway for the Sun”, 9x12”, birch bark and painted paper on cradled panel, 2026. Work in progress ✨ I brought home some birch bark that I found on the ground during a walk this weekend. I was so excited because I’ve had a vision for this little collage since January, and that turned out to be the missing piece of the puzzle. After these layers are dry, I’ll add the remaining details and try a glossy finish. Fingers crossed the final result works the way I’m hoping. 😅 “Sidewalk Marigolds”, 8x10”, acrylic on canvas, 2026. Work in progress ✨ These greens and yellows keep showing up in my work, and I’m certain it’s because I’m still recovering from the winter doldrums (and also because I can’t get enough of these colors any time of the year). It’s a cold, rainy day today, but I’m getting a lot of joy from the colors finding their way into this painting this morning! 🌼🌱 “Synesthetic Snapshot I”, 16x20”, acrylic & mixed media on canvas, 2026. Work in progress ✨ For years I’ve been trying to figure out a way to capture a moment, or snapshot, or feeling, in my art that explores what it’s like to have synesthesia. Synesthesia means literally a “blending of the senses.” I see music (and all sound) in color. But the fleeting experience of seeing it in my mind’s eye 24/7 is impossible to accurately replicate. So, I’ve settled on a compromise, creating some art that is synesthesia-inspired, or synesthesia-adjacent, to start to work out some of the colors, textures, and layers that accompany music in my mind’s eye. “Release”, 30x30”, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 2026.
